Val's Dining Guide Baltimore 2006
When I was in 8th grade, I labored for months on a class project to decide what I was going to do for a living. I worried my mother by telling her I had chosen to be a world-famous chef. I reasoned that I would never go hungry, that I would be able to make people happy, that I would be able to exercise my creative instincts and that I would make a pretty good salary. Mom was the most supportive of people, but she secretly had hoped that I would aim higher; to be a doctor or a lawyer, or some kind of knight in shining armor who helped people. Even though my career path took me through law school, I never lost my love for cooking and sharing good food with others.
For the past 40 years, Baltimore has been one of my favorite cities. I know the city well, and love the people who live here. Over the years, I have looked for opportunities to attend sports, social, and cultural events. But even more often, it has been my habit to experience the restaurants here, which are truly outstanding. My particular preference is for Italian food, which explains why that section in this guide is disproportionately large. Following are my recommendations for attendees of NAHC's 25th Annual Meeting.

Restaurants Specializing in Maryland Crabs!
If Baltimore is known for anything it is for it's world famous Maryland Blue Crab. There is fierce competition within the city about who makes the best Crab cakes. According to the Baltimore Magazine the honor for 2005 goes to the G & M Restaurant & Lounge located at 804 Hammonds Ferry Road, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090 with the following phone, 410-636-1777. They say this restaurant offers softball sized portions of this delectable dish. Following below is the listing of some of my favorites. Eating at one of these establishments is a must for any visit to Baltimore. Most people say that it is one of the best eating adventures of their lifetime.
Most Famous Crab House
Obrycki's Crab House
This place is legendary. For generations, local Baltimoreans have been coming here to put on bibs, roll up their sleeves and pound away with wooden mallets on a bushel or two of Obrycki's famed steamed crabs. Lately the locals have had to fight tourists who have been put in the know by hotel concierges. The decor is described as "windowless," but no one seems to care. The food and the experience of shelling and eating crabs washed down by a pint or two of beer, is something not to be missed. Located in Fell's Point on 1727 E. Pratt Street. Call 410-732-6399 for reservations. $$$$
Consistently Best Crabs
Costas Inn
I've been to this huge, noisy hall in the blue-collar suburb of Dundalk three times in the last few years, and have had peak crab experiences everytime. Owner Nick Triantafilos has great sourcing year-round for huge, meaty, sweet crabs. Good crab dishes and cole slaw too. 4100 North Point Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21222, 410-477-1975. $$
Best Value in Great Crabs
Ocean Pride
Slightly upscale, in the northern suburb of Lutherville- but where else can you get the biggest crabs for only 50 bucks a dozen? Great year-round feasting. And a really distinctive crab spice that has a touch of ginger in it. 1534 York Road, Lutherville, MD 21093, 410-321-7744. $$$
Biggest Crabs
Crab Quarters
A tricked-up "nautical" design-a little tacky, to be honest-on a busy boulevard in a suburb near the airport. But man, do they have big crabs; they call them "monsters," they're fabulous as well as big, they're often available, and they sell for $60 the dozen (you could do worse.) 2909 Eastern Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21220, 410-686-2222. $$$
Best Crabs Outdoors
Mike's
I LOVE eating crabs outdoors, though there are precious few opportunities in downtown Baltimore to do so. So I like going to Mike's, in Riva, right near Annapolis, about a 30-minute drive from Baltimore. It's a huge, popular, boisterous place with lots of tables right on the water. Unfortunately, it's next to an industrial-looking bridge-go to nearby Cantler's if you want more charm-but I love the crabs at Mike's. 3030 Old Riva Rd., Riva, MD 21140, 410-956-2784. $$
Most Upscale Crabhouse Decor
Bo Brooks
One of Baltimore's most famous crabhouses moved last year to a spiffy, waterside location. The crabs are good, the Crab Augratin (sic) is better (the best version that I've tried of what's usually called Crab Imperial.) But go to Bo Brooks principally if you want a crabhouse venue for a date or a business lunch; the white booths with lamps near the front door are cozy, urbane, and altogether different from the usual crabhouse funk. 2701 Boston St., Baltimore, MD 21206, 410-558-0202. $$$
Quirkiest Crab House
Gunning's
Gunning's is a hoot. It is, essentially, one of the finest bars you'll ever see, with an outside "garden" for crab-eating featuring cheap furniture, poured concrete, white plastic tables, and tacky patio lights swinging above. If you love the romance of slumming, you're home! The crabs I had were good-but the real fun's in the wildly idiosyncratic things, including stuffed soft-shell crab, a pile of steamed crab claws, and one of the weirdest things I've ever tasted: batter-fried green peppers sprinkled with confectioner's sugar. Incidentally, the Gunning family moved on some years ago to open a new, shiny, much less quirky place called, of course, The Original Gunning's Seafood Restaurant in Hanover. The real original's in Brooklyn, under new management, just across a bridge from downtown Baltimore. 3901 S. Hanover St., Baltimore, MD 21225, 410-354-0085. $$$
