Glossary

Bleed
The part of the image that extends beyond the trim marks on a page.

Camera-ready Art
Type, artwork, and graphic materials ready to be photographed by a process camera.

Character
A single element in a typeface (letter, numeral, punctuation mark, or space between words).

Color Build
Using 4-color process printing to match a PMS color.

Emulsion Side
The side of the film coated with the silver halide emulsion that should face the lens during exposure.

Film Negative
Film developed after exposure. Images appear with black hues as transparent and white areas as opaque.

Film Positive
Film exposed to a film negative and developed. Images appear with black hues as opaque and white areas as transparent.

Font (or typeface)
A complete family of letters, numbers, punctuation marks, etc. of a given design.

Four-color Process
Printing in full color, which requires four plates for printing in the process colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK).

Insert
A printed piece prepared for insertion, usually blown or stapled into a publication.

Offset
The process of using an intermediate blanket cylinder to transfer an image from the image carrier to the substrate (paper).

Pica
Printer's unit of measurement used principally in typesetting. One pica equals approximately 1/6 inch.

PMS
Specifying color by numbered color samples from swatch books.

Publisher's Choice
The second color that publisher chooses to run throughout periodical.

Process Colors
Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK).

Tearsheet
A single page of a publication containing a specific ad or article in print.

Trim Size
The actual size of the publication after it has been printed and cut by the bindery.

Velox (also stat or RC paper)
Black-and-white line art on photographic paper.
