NAHC Attends OASIS Training for the State OASIS Coordinator Educators (OCE)

The National Association for Home Care & Hospice was the invited guest of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) Coordinator’s training meeting. CMS regularly holds an OASIS training session for the State OASIS Coordinator Educators (OCE) for which NAHC is one of the only outside organizations invited to attend. This training session lasted three full days and covered all aspects of the OASIS from the history of OASIS to item-specific instructions. The invitation offered NAHC a unique opportunity to hear the same OASIS instructions that are provided to the State Survey Agency personnel.
The training session emphasized the importance of understanding the OASIS conventions when completing the items to ensure accurate quality measuring. Comprehensive instructions for completing each item using real world scenarios that clinicians face on a day-to-day basis were included. In addition, the session incorporated the OASIS training modules that are currently on the CMS web site.
The OASIS training sessions reinforced the need for ongoing training for the accurate completion of the OASIS instrument. With increased medical review from the various Medicare contractors and the emphasis on demonstrating quality care in all health care sectors, agencies must ensure that their clinicians fully understand how to accurately complete the OASIS data set.
NAHC encourages all providers to take advantage of the CMS OASIS training modules. The modules are a great introduction to completing the OASIS data set for those clinicians who are new to the instrument, and also serves as a good refresher for clinicians already familiar with the data set.
To access the modules go here and select the “I Am A Provider” option. Next select “Web-based Training” and scroll down to the “Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) Training” option click on “Launch the Course.”
