Jacob Reider, a family physician who serves as the chief medical officer for the national coordinator for health information technology, will become the acting national coordinator on October 4 when Farzad Mostashari officially steps down.
Mostashari, who announced last month that he was leaving after two years as the leader of the Obama administration’s effort to promote electronic health technology, told his staff in an email message Wednesday evening that his deputy, David Muntz, is also leaving on October 4.
In addition to Reider taking over as the National Coordinator, Mostashari said that Lisa Lewis, who is now deputy coordinator for operations, will become the acting principal deputy. HHS is conducting a national search for his permanent successor, Mostashari said.
“The Department and Administration believe that ONC’s continued success is a centerpiece of the nation’s ability to transform health care delivery systems to achieve better care at lower cost,” Mostashari said in the email. In his email to the staff, Muntz said he looks “forward to continuing to support HHS’ vision of achieving interoperability and better engaging patients from the private.”
