Educate Lawmakers, and Hear from Prominent Senate Champions, Top CMS Officials; April 3 – April 5 in Washington, D.C.
March 9, 2016 11:48 AM
The National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) will join together on April 3 – April 5, 2016, for NAHC’s 2016 March on Washington Conference in Washington, D.C. Attendees will have the opportunity to urge members of Congress to take action on NAHC’s legislative priorities, such as allowing non-physician practitioners to certify home health plans of care, ensuring the availability of home care and hospice personnel to meet the growing needs of the Baby Boomer generation, ensuring adequate reimbursement for and access to Medicare home health services, ensuring the availability of hospice and palliative care for all near the end of life, and protecting and expanding access to home and community-based services under Medicaid.
The March on Washington will bring together some of the leading voices in Congress that have supported the home care and hospice community in recent years. A group of prominent Senators will appear at a special Senate Breakfast on Tuesday, April 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. NAHC members are encouraged to come hear their perspectives on the 2016 legislative agenda, receive guidance on how home care and hospice providers can more effectively advocate for their patients and employees, and show appreciation to these champions who have worked so hard for seniors and the home care and hospice community.
Four Senators have already committed at this early date to speaking at the event, and NAHC has extended invitations to other Senators, including many who have attended past March on Washington Senate Breakfasts. Those confirmed include Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), who chairs the Special Committee on Aging; Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), a member of the Committee on Finance; Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a member of Senate Finance Committee; Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the Special Committee on Aging. All four senators are long-time home care and hospice champions. Additional information about the Senate Breakfast is available here.
The March on Washington conference program will feature top officials from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and home care and hospice experts during the following sessions on topics most important to the industry.
National Update on Home Care and Hospice
Medicare Home Health Policy Outlook
Medicare Hospice Policy Outlook
Advocacy Preparation & Networking on Advocacy Strategies
Federal Innovations in Health Policy and Delivery
Medicaid Home Care Policy Outlook
Advocates will be able to meet with and educate offices of both the House and the Senate during the March on Washington. While the House surprised everyone by deciding to work during the week leading up to Easter and take off the two weeks after Easter, the Senate will follow the historical pattern of taking off Easter week and the week after. This means that Senators are expected to be in Washington but Representatives will likely be out of town during the March on Washington. NAHC expects House health policy staff will be available for meetings; in fact, it may be easier to schedule meetings with staffers as the House will not be in session
NAHC will host a reception with U.S. House of Representatives health policy staffers. The reception provides the opportunity for home care and hospice advocates to extend thanks to Washington policy staffers who have worked tirelessly on behalf of home care and hospice. It is also an opportunity for advocates to “debrief” following a day of visits on Capitol Hill.
