CMS Issues Hospice Quality Updates

In recent days the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued the following notices related to the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP):
Hospice Item Set (HIS): Errata v2.01.1 for the DRAFT version of the Hospice Item Set (HIS) data submission specifications (V2.01.0) is now available on the HIS Technical Information webpage. This errata contains one issue, which is a revision to the text of warning edit -3077.
Following is detail related to the change:
The text of warning edit - 3077 currently reads as follows: If N0500A=  or N0510A= , then J0905 should be equal to  if opioids were used to treat pain. However, opioids may be used to treat other symptoms, in which case J0905 should be equal to .
The text of edit - 3077 will be revised to read as follows: If N0500A=  or N0510A= , indicating a scheduled or PRN opioid was initiated or continued, and J0905 = , then:
(a) If the opioid was used to treat pain, J0905 should be equal to .
(b) If the opioid was used to treat another symptom (e.g., shortness of breath) AND there is no further evidence that pain is an active problem for the patient, leave J0905 equal to  and disregard this warning message.
CAHPS Update: The next CAHPS Hospice Survey Data Submission Deadline is approaching -- The data submission deadline for patients that passed away in January, February and March 2017 (Quarter 1 2017) is August 9, 2017. The XML File Specification Version 3.1 must be used for the upcoming data submission. To view or download the XML File Specification Version 3.1, please click on the left hand Technical Specifications navigation button.
Survey vendors are responsible for successfully submitting files by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on August 9, 2017. Please make sure to allow adequate time to submit data in case resubmissions are necessary.
A series of edit checks will be applied to successfully submitted files. All files that are able to be decrypted will receive reports containing the results of these edit checks. Survey vendors and hospices will receive an email indicating CAHPS Hospice Survey Data Submission Reports are available for viewing in their respective folders in the CAHPS Hospice Survey Data Warehouse. Reports will be posted by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on the next business day after submission by the survey vendor.

In addition, hospices must have a CAHPS Hospice Survey Vendor Authorization Form on file with the RAND Corporation in order for the survey vendor to submit data on behalf of the hospice. Contact the CAHPS Hospice Survey Project Team (hospicecahpssurvey@HCQIS.org) immediately if your organization has not already submitted the CAHPS Hospice Survey Vendor Authorization Form.
