A Guide to Shopping in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is known for its sun and beaches but equally as a shopping destination. From antique stores to flea markets, from high-end shopping gallerias to outlet malls, Fort Lauderdale has it all.
While most attendees at the NAHC Annual Meeting will concentrate their shopping energies within a few miles of the hotels or convention center, others will take advantage of the opportunity to visit legendary shopping centers in nearby Dade or Palm Beach Counties.

The map below shows the locations of the major shopping malls in southwest Florida. It should be obvious from even a cursory glance that five of the top nine shopping destinations in this area (Broward, Dade and Palm Beach Counties) are located in the Fort Lauderdale area. Three malls deserve special mention:

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale
This is Broward County’s premier shopping center. The Galleria provides two spectacular levels of world-class shopping, glamorous style, outstanding stores and first-class service. There are four department stores that anchor The Galleria – Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillard’s, Macy’s and Neiman Marcus. Additionally, there are more than 200 specialty stores including Teavana, Cole Haan, Williams Sonoma, Ann Taylor and Banana Republic.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale is located on East Sunrise Blvd. between A1A and Federal Highway. For more information, go to www.galleriamall-fl.com or call (954) 564-1015.

Las Olas Riverfront
This is a fantastic place to do a little shopping before having dinner or meeting friends for drinks. The Las Olas Riverfront has more than 260,000 square feet of entertainment, restaurant and boutique retail space and is located on the New River. Some of the establishments here include: Ugly Tuna Saloona, Max’s, Maya Southwest Grill, Regal 23 Theaters, Beach Soles, Vogue Italia and the Metro Café.

Las Olas Riverfront is an open-air plaza. The wide array of shops and kiosks have everything from designer clothing, shoes and accessories to fine jewelry, candles and cigars.

The Las Olas Riverfront is located at 300 S.W. First Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. From US Route 1, turn west on Broward Blvd. and then south on Brickell Ave. For more information, go to www.riverfrontfl.com or call (954) 522-6556.

Sawgrass Mills
If you’ve been to outlet malls before and then you might not think it worth the 11-mile drive from Fort Lauderdale. Think again. This is no ordinary outlet mall. It is certainly worth the trip. Sawgrass Mills is Florida’s largest retail and entertainment center and features more than 350 name-brand outlets, restaurants, movie theaters and entertainment venues. Some of the names represented here are Sharper Image, Tommy Hilfiger, Stride Rite, Lacoste, J. Crew, Calvin Klein, the Children’s Place, Nike, Ralph Lauren and many more.
Part of the Mills Company chain of outlet malls, Sawgrass Mills is also home to Wannado City, America’s first indoor role-playing theme park for kids.

If all that weren’t enough, an expansion in 2005 brought in another mall across the street. The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass isn’t just another strip of outlets. No, this is where all of the upscale shopping and dining is located – in its own little elegant, open-air promenade. It also features some of the world’s best names, such as Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo, Barneys New York, David Yurman, Kate Spade, Le Creuset and others. Guests can also indulge at Coco’s Day Spa & Salon.

Sawgrass Mills is located at 12801 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Sunrise, Fla., two miles north of Interstates I-75 and I-595, just off the Sawgrass Expressway interchange. For more information, go to www.sawgrassmills.com or call (954) 846-2300.
