Home Care & Hospice Hall of Fame
Honors 30 Who Brought Care Home

NAHC will celebrate its 30th anniversary by creating a unique hall of fame in its Washington, DC, office. NAHC Chair Andrea L. Devoti will announce the 30 honorees whose leadership, service, and sense of innovation have earned them a place in the Home Care & Hospice Hall of Fame. Together, they have played a big role in raising awareness of home care and hospice, an important yardstick for future Hall of Fame winners. Check back each year at NAHC’s Annual Meeting when we announce new members of the Home Care and Hospice Hall of Fame.

Introductions

Andrea Devoti, MSN, MBA, CHCE
Andrea L. Devoti is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Neighborhood Health Agencies (NHA), Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania.  NHA has been a local provider of home health, hospice, private duty, and Senior HealthLink services to the people in Chester County and the surrounding areas of Pennsylvania since 1912. She also serves as Chairman of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice’s Board of Directors.

Devoti has over 30 years of health care experience; 12 in home care and hospice.  She is a Certified Home Care & Hospice Executive (CHCE) with a Master of Business Administration Degree from Widener University and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania.

Honorable Tom Daschle
Senator Daschle is among the longest-serving Senate Democratic leaders in history and the only one to serve twice as both Majority and Minority Leader. During his tenure, he navigated the Senate through historic challenges that he chronicled in his book Like No Other Time: the 107th Congress and the Two Years that Changed America Forever . Since leaving the Senate, he has served as special policy advisor to the law firm of Alston+Bird, emerged as a leading thinker on climate change, and shown his expertise in health care by publishing Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis. He currently serves as a senior policy adviser for the global law firm DLA Piper.

Val J. Halamandaris, JD
Val Halamandaris is president of NAHC and the preeminent voice of home health. For 29 years, he has led NAHC to become one of the country’s most respected associations. Under his guidance, NAHC has broadened support for home health in the halls of Congress, where he served 20 years as counsel to both the House and Senate Committee on Aging. As a congressional investigator, he won fame for exposing nursing home abuse and rooting out fraud against seniors. His work has been featured on 60 Minutes, 20/20, and in national magazines such as Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report.

Ken Dychtwald
Ken Dychtwald has emerged as our country’s foremost visionary thinker on the social and economic impact of the age wave. He is a psychologist, gerontologist, and documentary filmmaker. He’s also the best-selling author of 15 books, most recently A New Purpose: Redefining Money, Family, Work, Retirement and Success. In 2007, he made his debut as a documentary filmmaker with an acclaimed PBS special, “The Boomer Century.” His most recent PBS special, “With Purpose,” aired nationwide in 2009. And he has shown his own sense of purpose as founder of Age Wave, a firm that helps government and business better serve boomers and mature adults. His trailblazing ideas have reached millions and shown them that we can play a vital role in the second half of life.

Eleanor Clift
Eleanor Clift became a contributing editor for Newsweek Magazine in September 1994. She writes on the Washington power structure, the influence of women in politics and other issues.She is currently assigned to follow the jockeying over policy and politics in a divided Congress, where the two parties share power and where President Obama faces major opposition. Clift brings her political perspective to analyze what lessons Obama and the newly empowered Republicans have learned and how both sides are gearing up for the 2012 presidential election. Clift is a regular panelist on the syndicated talk show, The McLaughlin Group . She has appeared as herself in several movies, including Dave, Independence Day, Murder at 1600, Rising Sun and the CBS series, Murphy Brown.

Tommy Thompson has led the charge for reform of America’s health care system. As Secretary of Health & Human Services, he promoted the Medicare drug benefit and launched a crusade to encourage healthier lifestyles. Before that he served 14 years as governor of Wisconsin, where he extended health insurance to low-income families and children. Strategist and Commentator
Begala is a political analyst for CNN, where he is part of the political team that won an Emmy for its coverage of the 2006 elections and a Peabody Award for its coverage of the 2008 Presidential election. Begala served as counselor to President Clinton in the White House, where he helped define and defend the Administration’s agenda, from the State of the Union Address to the economic, domestic and international issues the White House faces each day. With his partner James Carville, he was a senior strategist for the Clinton-Gore Presidential Campaign in 1992, and he has helped direct the political strategy of numerous other campaigns across the country and around the world, including advising politicians in Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.

Presentation of Delta Study

Presents initial report of findings and recommendations from the survey of “The Delta Study to Reduce Hospitalizations: A National Study to Reduce Avoidable Hospitalizations Through Home Care.”

The Delta Study is the largest study on best practice strategies for reducing avoidable hospitalizations in the history of home care. It involves more than 800 agencies, most of which are in the top 20% of lowest hospitalization rates in the country. It is sponsored by Delta Health Technologies and co-sponsored NAHC. Wayne Newton
A lot has happened since Wayne Newton first set the world on fire as a big-voiced six year old. Wayne has sold countless records, performed live for millions, and earned renown as “Mr. Las Vegas.” He’s also known for the big way that he gives back. He has taken 16 USO tours, and was the first performer to entertain our troops in the Middle East. In addition, he supports numerous charity groups for the ill, disabled, and underprivileged. His goal, as he once explained, is “to leave the world a better place than I found it. I guess that’s what I hope to do.”
