Updates on Health IT Interoperability Progress from CMS, ONC reported CMS’s acting administrator Andy Slavitt and ONC’s director Karen DeSalvo co-announced that CMS will be expanding its efforts for connected health IT and interoperability to long-term care, behavioral health, and substance abuse treatment centers. “The great promise of technology is to bring information to our fingertips, connect us to one another… and create a platform for the next generation of innovations,” the two wrote. CMS will offer 90 percent federal matching funds to states that support statewide health information exchanges.

Has Telemedicine Proven its Value? reported at a recent Medicare Payment Advisory Committee (MedPAC) meeting the question of the cost of telehealth was raised during a discussion of why more doctors aren’t using the technology. One theory is that telemedicine is making it easier to access healthcare services – therefore, more people are using it unnecessarily, for complaints or conditions that would simply cure themselves over time. MedPAC members pushed back against the argument, saying telemedicine will increase access to healthcare and reduce overall expenses over time.

NQF: 9 Health IT Safety Issues and What to Do About Them reported the National Quality Forum (NQF) issued a report to identify and address patient safety issues related to health IT, listing several recommendations. The report, "Identification and Prioritization of Health IT Patient Safety Measures," said that with proper design, implementation and use, healthcare organizations can reduce medical errors and improve care quality. "HIT will fulfill its potential only if the risks associated with its use are identified and a coordinated effort is developed to mitigate those risks," the report said.

Healthcare Providers Driving Population Health with Data, Mobile Apps, Telehealth Tools reported population health management is an increasingly important strategy that more healthcare providers are adopting. And as they embrace this practice, they're depending to information technology to make population health work. Health systems are using electronic health records, telemedicine programs, mobile tools, data warehouses, analytics and more to manage population health. And they're seeing a bright future for population health and the IT that powers it. Providers are using existing systems such as EHRs and analytics to power their efforts.

Why Health Data Interoperability is Setting EHR Vendors on FHIR reported productivity losses, usability concerns, alarm fatigue, data blocking accusations, security concerns, and limited functionality have become commonplace complaints by providers about health IT. At the root of all these grievances is a lack of health data interoperability. Previously of little concern to fee-for-service organizations, interoperability has become a primary goal for providers who are anticipating the importance of the healthcare information exchange and actionable insights that will support the transition to value-based reimbursement and population health management.
