Importance of Home Health Care in Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Models Discussed During Senate Finance Hearing

Under the Affordable Care Act, CMS was tasked with creating the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to look at different delivery models that improve health outcomes while reducing overall costs to both the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The Senate Finance Committee – the committee with jurisdiction over Medicare and Medicaid – recently convened a hearing on ways to reform Medicare and Medicaid’s delivery system. The Innovation Center’s Director, Dr. Richard J. Gilfillan, was the hearing’s sole witness.

During the hearing, several senators asked about the role home care has in new delivery models for Medicare and Medicaid, with some expressing strong support for such care. Dr. Gilfillan, too, indicated his support for home care in new delivery models for Medicare and Medicaid - citing ACOs and primary care initiatives – that emphasize the use of home health services to improve the quality of care while limiting unnecessary hospitalizations.

Nurse Recognition Program Seeking 2013 Nominations
Deadline Extended: April 8, 2013!

HHNA is currently accepting nominations to honor and recognize home care and hospice nurses from across the country. Agencies may nominate any registered nurse to represent their state for 2013. Nominations will be reviewed by the Nurse Recognition Program Selection Committee and one nurse will be recognized from each state.

Update on NAHC’s Inquires and CMS' Responses on Upcoming PECOS Edits

While home health agencies are about one month from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) May 1st target date for activation of Phase II of PECOS edits, many critical questions remain unanswered. These edits will result in zero payments on home health requests for anticipated payment (RAP) and denial of final claims if the ordering/referring physician is not enrolled in PECOS. CMS announced that it will update the PECOS Ordering and Referring list twice a week - on Monday and Thursday - to ensure better access to information about approved physicians.
