Effective Date for the New Therapy Reassessment Requirement Corrected

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued an official correction to the effective date for the revised therapy reassessment requirement.

The final rule for the CY 2015 Home Health Prospective Payment System (HHPPS) Rate Update contained an inconsistency error whereby CMS stated two different time points for when the new therapy reassessment requirement would be effective.

CMS, in their final decision, stated that the changes were effective for episodes ‘‘ending’’ on or after January 1, 2015. However, in the comment response prior to the final decision discussion, CMS stated that the new therapy reassessment requirement will apply to episodes that begin on or after January 1, 2015.  CMS clarifies in the federal register notice that they intended for the therapy reassessment changes finalized in the regulations at § 409.44 to be effective for episodes ‘‘beginning’’ on or after January 1, 2015.

About 31 telemedicine programs will receive $8.6 million in federal grant money for rural healthcare initiatives as part of a wider move by the government in support of telemedicine to help patients in rural communities gain better access to primary care physicians and medical specialists. The grants to rural telemedicine programs are part of a wider package of funds totaling more Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Development Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) initiatives.  USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the grants in late November.

Specifically, USDA Rural Development awarded 65 grants across 34 states to improve health care and educational services in rural communities. Of these 65 grants, 31 grants totaling $8.6 million were healthcare related.
